I came in to find the screen frozen yesterday no major recent changes so I naturally rebooted. On reboot the system passed POST but froze at a black screen. I then rebooted again and tried to boot to safe mode. Saw a stream of file names, but the boot keeps freezing on a file called iomdisk. I used to have an external zip drive, but haven't used it in years.

Unplugged all the hardware out that wasn't necessary. Crossed our fingers and swapped out video cards as well. Same thing. We were able to plug the hard drive into another machine as a slave and run some tests on it. Nothing seems out of whack. We can even navigate throughout the drive.
Luckily this is not a critical machine and we have a week to work with it, however, this thing has now become a challenge to everyone here.
SYS It's beginning to sound like a job for the repairer is it under warranty? Did you ever check to see if it would boot from a single floppy XP boot disk? Has anyone got a copy of the Knoppix CD to see if that self contained operating system will run from CD on that laptop? Like I said earlier this has become personal! Sorry, I don't think I mentioned, but this is a desktop machine. It would not boot from a single boot floppy. I can take the hard drive in question and boot it up fine on my computer.
Which led me to believe we've got mainboard or cpu problems I've already swapped out memory. It used to just hang up when trying to use Last Known Should I attempt to reinstall this file? Currently I'm running a virus scan on the drive from another computer which I probably should have done in the beginning , however, that doesn't explain why it would boot on my machine and my drive would not boot on their machine.

Yes a repair install can fail if some of the files it wants to copy are older or the older files clash with the new that are left. This means that your only option left is a clean install to get Windows working again. Before you reinstall you will want to save your data.
In order to recover your data you will need to access the failed windows from another operating system. Options here include Take the drive out and slave it to another pc. Boot the pc from linux or drdos or the Norton recovery CD Install a second copy of Windows onto a second hard drive Install a second copy of Windows onto a second partition, carved out of the free space on the first hard drive.
What are your resources? Post again if you need help with any pat of this. Incidentally my Norton hasn't wanted to restart after updates for a very long time. Studio T. Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm leaning towards installing a 2nd copy of windows onto the HDD and getting important data and files, then doing a clean install.
Can someone post details on how to carve out a new partition to put a second copy of Windows onto the existing drive? Now that you have a failed repair install, a clean install is your only option. Amjad , Jun 14, I do have access to second PC.
