I will definitely recommend this book to fantasy, fantasy lovers. Your Rating:. Your Comment:. Read Online Download. We escaped the insta-love,thank god. I really enjoyed how view spoiler [Sonea and Akkarin had to take time to trust each other, then become friends, and then eventually fall in love hide spoiler ]. Dannyl and Tayend were so adorable together i might start to throw up rainbows. There many, many characters death, but there was a war,and a war has casualties.

Like Trudi said herself,I'm never going to forget the ending of this book since view spoiler [ Akkarin died in a way that was so frustrating and simple it could define any war.

Not everyone gets to die in an amazing sacrifice. I liked that. I liked Lorlen's death as well, even though they both broke my heart. They were both casualties from war hide spoiler ] The ending left a few questions, but i intend to read the sequel series by Trudi Canavan.

I recommend this book as one of my favorite fantasy books ever written. Jul 21, Richard rated it it was ok Shelves: young-fantasy. I resorted to skimming to finish the book as I wasn't invested in the characters at all and whilst there were a few things to be cleared up I didn't care how they would be resolved.

If the series had cut out large portions of the first book, the whole of the second book and just used some of the plot devices 5. One thing I found in this book is that with me skimming a lot of the text it was quite noticeable that the author doesn't have a sense of urgency and spends a lot of time describing possible outcomes for various characters actions as supposed to letting them get on with something and describe events.

It really slowed and bogged things down for me. So whilst this third book was slightly better than the previous two I won't read anymore by this author, she's just not my cup of tea. I won't be recommending the books to anyone either. Aug 13, Kirsty Amethyst Bookwyrm rated it it was amazing Shelves: favorites , fantasy , review. Meanwhile Dannyl and Tayend are happy together and have a mission to stop a group of rogue magicians, and Cery is now a Thief and is tracking down some serial killers.

Trudi Canavan is a fantastic author and this is my favourite series because of the story, how she writes the characters, but mostly it has a certain spark. This book has action, romance and suspense. I also like how much Sonea has grown as a character throughout the series and how she puts others before herself even those she does not like. I went from hating him to pitying him to finally crying at the end about him, it is amazing how Canavan does it.

My one criticism of this book is the ending, Why Trudi why kill him off when they both could of survived if they did ONE thing differently! I know good triumphed over evil but I like my endings happy sorry rant over hide spoiler ] I would recommend this trilogy to everyone especially whose who likes fantasy whether YA or not similar to Maria V Snyder or Kristin Cashore.

Apr 14, Dhuaine rated it did not like it Shelves: fantasy , young-adult. We learn about the impending doom only in this book and it takes half of it to actually get to the point.

The climax, admittedly, consists of more than three pages, but it's very The scale of the event is striking; if you count the persons fighting, it would look live a tavern brawl. There are some plot devices here that made me consider giving this book 2 stars, but the immense flatness of the characters did it for me. None of them behave like real people. One scheme in particular is prevalent: a dude, previously thought evil, exclaims that in fact he's a good guy and everybody cheers and forgets that he's a jerk.

I'm not counting the dumb clones and canon fodder. The ending wasn't worse than the entire book: it fit, at least. There were tons of loose ends and unexplained things left though, so I wouldn't be surprised if Canavan writes a continuation. Aug 18, Katie Lumsden rated it really liked it. I really enjoyed this close to the series. It has great characterisation and world-building, and the pacing throughout is brilliant. Jun 18, Alice Bridgwater rated it liked it Shelves: fantasy.

I am moderately satisfied with the series, though not with the first book. What I think about each of the three books: 1 "The Guild": almost half of the book is spent relating the tentatives of Sonea, supported by a friend and the Thieves, to conceal herself from the Guild magicians: I think it is a waste of time and energy, because every reader undestands since a few pages that she's going to be captured and instructed from the Guild it is impossible not to undestand it: the story is related I am moderately satisfied with the series, though not with the first book.

Some thirty pages or so would have been enough to introduce us with the slums and the Thieves and a couple of characters coming through the whole series. Instead, one is just tempted to skip useless pages in order to go to the key events. Flaw: unfortunately it is not concluded in itself, and it is absolutely necessary to read the third book.

As a conclusion: I would give 1 star to the first book, and three stars to the other two. The average would be less than two stars and a half, but I'm willing to give it three stars as a global evaluation because the story has quite a grip on the reader and, despite the series is far from perfect and the characters are sometimes a bit commonplace, one finds himself pleasurably driven forward.

This book is one of my all-time favorites, and that's in spite of view spoiler [the devastating ending which I wish Canavan would re-write! There were definite possibilities for it to go in a different direction.

Maybe the author didn't want it to be predictable, in which case she succeeded. Maybe it needed to end this way for some purpose to be revealed in the follow-up Traitor Spy series. Or maybe tragic endings are sometimes better for the quality and the emotional impact, whether we enjo This book is one of my all-time favorites, and that's in spite of view spoiler [the devastating ending which I wish Canavan would re-write!

Or maybe tragic endings are sometimes better for the quality and the emotional impact, whether we enjoy it or not.

Whatever the reason, it was absolutely gut-wrenching. And although it haunts me, I will read this again. I almost prefer the Age of the Five series because it has a happier ending I highly recommend that one as well , but this trilogy taken as a whole is just fantastic. I'm really excited to read the Traitor Spy Trilogy waiting for all 3 books to be out before I start. I'm just hoping it will help heal the gaping wounds left by this one!

Nov 10, Sophia's Thoughts rated it liked it. This is the problem with re-reading old favourites once you're a more critical reader. I didn't enjoy this as much as I did in the past, there are some relationship elements that I found a bit difficult to get behind.

I still think this is a great series though and very much ahead of it's time in terms of thematic content This is the problem with re-reading old favourites once you're a more critical reader. Wasn't my favourite in the series, hence only three stars Especially when she had his baby at the end - cringe. The build up was great, but then they got together and I got bored of them almost straight away.

And perhaps Sonea c Wasn't my favourite in the series, hence only three stars And perhaps Sonea could have found out the truth nearing the end when he was dying.

I suppose then their determination to stay together would have been a bit more difficult to express, but I think it would of worked better. Of course then there wouldn't be a baby to carry the series on, but I think a baby could've come into it a different way - she could've named him after Akkarin or something bittersweet.

Looking forward to seeing what the next series contains. It's a long time since I read a good-sized book straight through in less than 24 hours! The fact that this book falls into that category was quite a surprise, I hadn't expected it to be so deeply engaging.

The first two books were good but in my opinion this is the best of the trilogy. There is nothing particularly original or stupendous about the story, which is why it reaches only a 4-star rating but for sheer enjoyment and readability I cannot fault it and find myself sorry to be leaving thes It's a long time since I read a good-sized book straight through in less than 24 hours!

There is nothing particularly original or stupendous about the story, which is why it reaches only a 4-star rating but for sheer enjoyment and readability I cannot fault it and find myself sorry to be leaving these captivating characters behind. I do hope that one day the star system will be increased to allow for books like this, which fall somewhere between excellent and amazing, to be given more accurate acclaim.

So disappointed it's hard to talk about it. What kind of head space was I in when I enjoyed the first two books in this series? This was just awful. Sonea is so dependent on the males in this novel. She is described as independent and 'wilful', but I don't see it Canavan. Show don't tell. Literally the gay couple was all I lived for in this novel.

No much unnecessary death and explaining if possible future situations. I can do that as a reader, thanks very much. Also what the hell was the point So disappointed it's hard to talk about it. Also what the hell was the point of cery's girlfriend?? Literally what did she contribute to this novel??? Literally nothing May 30, imts rated it really liked it Recommended to imts by: hannah. Shelves: young-adult , heroes-i-adore , fantasy , That's not how I remembered it. It was over way too fast.

On the other hand, I love the characters in this series. Aug 17, Lili Marcus rated it it was amazing Shelves: fantasy , family , young-adult. Until Akkarin was left no choice but to tell her everything and teach her what he knows. Sonea, getting closer to Akkarin everyday, is suddenly amidst a much greater conflict that endanger not only Akkarin and herself, but the whole Imardin.

Sonea and Akkarin must do all their best to protect everything, and everyone, they treasure, even if it means letting everyone in the guild cast the two of them out.

Out of the three, this is the best one, if writing is to be considered. The author successfully constructed all the plot points that I think she liked to present. No plot holes left, which by the way, I thought there will be. However, I still found one minor thing that bothered me. I had to ask why? It was outstanding how the author used some of the settings in the advantage of the plot.

I was nodding in agreement while reading the parts in the slum, as if silently telling the author, nice touch. By now, all the main characters are already developed. I am so happy to see more of Akkarin and Cery. I am proud of Sonea making all the right decisions. She matured so much from that novice from the second book. The relationships between the characters also added some spice to what is already going on in the story.

Though, at first some romantically involved characters are surprising, still it all worked out perfectly at the end. My favorite was Tayend and Dannyl.
